No toll tax on two-wheelers; NHAI dismisses fake news reports

New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has dismissed media reports claiming that the Government of India is planning to impose toll charges on two-wheelers. Issuing a clarification via an official fact-check, the authority confirmed that no such proposal is under consideration.

“#FactCheck: Some sections of the media have reported that the Government of India plans to levy user fees on two-wheelers. NHAI would like to clarify that no such proposal is under consideration. There are no plans to introduce toll charges for two-wheelers,” the NHAI said, labelling the circulating claims as fake news.

Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari, also condemned the fake news circulated by some media outlets. “Important: Some media houses are spreading misleading news about the imposition of toll tax on two-wheeler vehicles. No such decision has been proposed. The exemption on toll for two-wheelers will continue in full. Spreading misleading news without verifying the truth to create sensation is not a sign of healthy journalism. I condemn this,” Gadkari said in a tweet.

The clarification comes amid widespread speculation that the era of toll-free travel for two-wheelers may be ending, with reports suggesting that two-wheelers would be required to pay tolls through the FASTag system from July 15. While some sources indicated preparations were underway to bring two-wheelers under the digital tolling network, the government has not issued any official notification to this effect. However, NHAI has labelled such claims as “#FakeNews” and urged the public not to believe unverified reports.

Currently, two-wheelers remain exempt from toll tax on national highways across India, and no changes to this policy have been announced. DeshGujarat
