Gujarat to host 2029 World Police & Fire Games; India becomes first South Asian host

Gandhinagar: India has secured the hosting rights for the 2029 World Police & Fire Games (WPFG), which will be held across Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Ekta Nagar in Kevadia, the state government announced on Thursday.

The biennial event will bring together over 10,000 athletes from more than 70 countries, representing police, fire, customs, and correctional services. With this, India becomes the first South Asian country to host the WPFG since its launch in 1985. The hosting rights were granted after India’s final pitch to the California Police Athletic Federation (CPAF)—the governing body of the games—on June 25 in Birmingham, Alabama.

India now joins the ranks of previous host nations such as the United States, Canada, Australia, China, and the Netherlands—marking its growing stature in the global multi-sport arena.

The bid process spanned 15 months and included a detailed technical and administrative review. Gujarat’s delegation at the final presentation included Ashwini Kumar, Principal Secretary (Sports, Youth, and Cultural Activities), and M. Thennarasan, Principal Secretary (Urban Development & Urban Housing), showcasing the state’s readiness and dedication to delivering a world-class event.

“After the successful hosting of the 36th National Games in 2022, the 2029 WPFG further boosts Gujarat’s vision to become India’s hub for high-performance, multi-sport events. With over 15 venues already functional, the state will build on its existing infrastructure while incorporating international-standard operational systems and overlays,” the government added.
