Laser light & sound show to come up at Ghela Somnath Mahadev Temple; ₹10 crore revamp approved
July 01, 2025
Gandhinagar: Recognising the religious and historical significance of Ghela Somnath Mahadev (a symbol of sacrifice where devotees gave their lives to protect the Shivling and preserve cultural identity during the Mughal invasions), the Gujarat government is undertaking the temple’s holistic development. While heritage conservation is underway, modern facilities are also being developed to serve the lakhs of devotees who visit. As part of these efforts, a laser light and sound show, similar to those at Somnath Mahadev and other prominent temples, will soon be introduced at Ghela Somnath Mahadev as well, an official press release stated.
Situated in Sompipaliya village of Vinchiya taluka in Rajkot district, the 550-year-old temple is undergoing extensive development worth ₹10 crore. The Gujarat Pavitra Yatradham Vikas Board, under the Tourism Department, is initiating works worth ₹6 crore to conserve cultural landmarks, such as the Paliya Samadhi, and improve facilities for devotees.
Laser Light & Sound Show and Musical Fountain to Illuminate the Temple
A key feature of the modernisation project is the upcoming laser light and sound show, being developed at a cost of ₹4 crore. A consultant has been appointed for the laser and sound show, and work is already underway. With similar shows already established at major religious sites across Gujarat, this temple too will soon join the list of spiritual destinations. Jasdan MLA and State Minister Kunvarji Bavaliya, whose constituency the temple is located in, is also actively supporting its development.
Temple Renovation and Rejuvenation
The Gujarat Pavitra Yatradham Vikas Board will undertake a series of modernisation and renovation works worth ₹6 crore. As part of this effort, the main temple will be renovated. Planned works include the renovation of the main gate and the Paliya Samadhi, along with seating arrangements for devotees, paved pathways around the temple, landscaping, and gardens. The Shaheed Smarak (martyrs’ memorial) will also be reconstructed and beautified. Additionally, the main road and its adjoining areas will be redeveloped, waiting zones will be developed, and the Yagna Shala will be reconstructed.
Shiv Sculptures, Paintings, Shopping Centre, and Amphitheatre
According to the GPYVB, the temple complex will see several new additions such as a main road ramp with steps and landscaped sides, stone paintings depicting various forms of Shivji, illustrating the stages of life from birth to death, a front roadside compound, a decorative stone arch in the compound wall, and a painting capturing the divine grace of Lord Shivji. A shopping centre and a parking space will come up at Meenal Devi foothill, facing the main temple. Temple renovation will include marble, kangra, and plinth cladding in the sanctum sanctorum. Seating for pilgrims will be expanded, and shops will be constructed on both sides of the road.
The redevelopment of Ghela Somnath Mahadev Temple is a testament to Gujarat’s dedication to preserving its cultural and spiritual heritage, stated the press note. DeshGujarat
