After CBSE, Gujarat Board schools to display ‘Sugar Boards’ too

Ahmedabad: Following in the footsteps of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has instructed schools across the state to install ‘Sugar Boards’ to raise awareness about the harmful effects of excessive sugar consumption among children. A circular has been issued to all District Education Officers (DEOs), mandating compliance.

As per the board’s circular, there has been a noticeable rise in Type-2 diabetes among school-aged children, largely attributed to high sugar intake. Overconsumption of sugar not only increases the risk of diabetes but also contributes to obesity, dental issues, and other metabolic disorders, ultimately affecting students’ long-term health and academic performance. Schools have been directed to strictly follow the instructions regarding the installation of sugar awareness boards.

Studies cited in the circular highlight that children aged 4 to 10 currently consume about 13% of their daily calories from sugar, while those aged 11 to 18 consume around 15%, far exceeding the recommended limit of 5%. Easy access to sugary snacks, beverages, and processed foods within school premises has significantly contributed to this rise. The Sugar Board initiative aims to sensitize students, parents, and school authorities to make healthier dietary choices. DeshGujarat
