Gandhinagar: As part of a two-day special drive conducted on July 18 and 19, the Office of the Controller, Legal Metrology and Consumer Affairs which functions under the Gujarat government undertook a statewide inspection of petrol and diesel pumps. Raids were carried out at 267 pumps situated in cities and along highways in all 33 districts of the state.

According to a statement from the Department of Legal Metrology, Gandhinagar, legal action was initiated against 16 petrol and diesel pumps where irregularities were found. Penalties were imposed at these locations following on-site inspections.

The district-wise breakdown of pumps where violations were detected includes three in Ahmedabad, two in Panchmahal, and one each in Vadodara, Surat, Kutch, Gir Somnath, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Botad, Surendranagar, Mehsana, Sabarkantha (Himmatnagar), and Morbi.

The inspections were conducted by Deputy Controllers, Assistant Controllers, and Inspectors from the state’s Weights and Measures Department. The drive aimed to ensure compliance with the Legal Metrology Act and associated rules. Violations observed during the inspections included the absence of required standard capacity measures, failure to re-verify or re-stamp measurement devices, and non-display of authentication certificates.

Officials stated that such checks are crucial for consumer protection, especially given the large volume of daily fuel purchases by commuters and transporters. The department emphasized the importance of ensuring that consumers are not misled or short-changed during fuel transactions.
