Mobile Number Update with Aadhaar Now Mandatory for Driving Licences and RCs
August 19, 2025
Ahmedabad: Following a directive from the Union Ministry of Road Transport, the state government has made it mandatory for all driving licence (DL) holders and vehicle owners to link or update their mobile numbers in the official transport database.
The update must be completed using Aadhaar authentication to improve communication and access to transport-related services. Individuals can now update or add their mobile numbers through the official Vahan and Sarathi portals. “This will ensure that the address on an individual’s Aadhaar card matches the one on their driving licence,” a government official said.
For those whose Aadhaar details differ in name or address, updates can be made directly at the RTO office. The state transport department has been sending reminders to DL holders and vehicle owners to update their details.
Officials emphasized that a valid mobile number is now required for changing addresses on a driving licence, renewing a licence, obtaining a duplicate licence, or adding a vehicle. Similarly, mobile number updates are necessary for vehicle registration processes, such as clearing hypothecation, obtaining a duplicate RC book, or selling a vehicle.
Authorities also plan to prevent drivers and vehicle owners from changing phone numbers or addresses to evade fines. In the future, all address changes will be based strictly on Aadhaar card details, officials added. DeshGujarat
