Junagadh: The holy shrine of Guru Gaurakshanath, located near the 5,500 steps of the mountain, was vandalized late at night by unidentified miscreants. The incident has sparked anger among the Nath sect saints and devotees across the state.
According to temple priest’s account, four unknown individuals allegedly locked him inside his room around 4 a.m. before entering the temple and damaging idols, breaking glass, and destroying sacred items. Due to early morning fog, the priest could not clearly see their faces.
Reacting sharply, Mahant Somnath Bapu of the Gaurakshanath Temple alleged that Hindu temples here have repeatedly been targeted by members of the Jain sect and expressed suspicion that this incident might be similar. The saints have given an application at Bhavnath Police Station, demanding immediate arrest and strict punishment for those responsible.
Superintendent of Police Subodh Odedara confirmed the vandalism and said multiple police teams, including the District LCB and Bhavnath Police, are investigating. CCTV footage and security arrangements around Girnar are being reviewed to identify the culprits.
The saint community, including Mahant Shernath Bapu of Bhavnath, has condemned the desecration, calling it a “blasphemous act” that has deeply hurt religious sentiments. Police have assured that those behind the attempt to disturb peace at the sacred Girnar site will be arrested soon.
