Gujarat govt OKays additional Narmada water for Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: The city’s drinking water supply is set to be enhanced next year, as the Gujarat government has approved an additional 1,000 million litres per day (MLD) of water from the Narmada canal to meet the growing needs of the city and nearby rural areas.

The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) had requested an increase in Narmada water allocation, which has now been approved by the state government. With this approval, the water supply from the Narmada main canal to the Kotarpur and Jaspur treatment plants, and from the Shedhi branch canal to the Raska plant, will be expanded.

Currently, Ahmedabad receives around 1,750 MLD of treated water from its main treatment plants — Kotarpur, Jaspur, and Raska. However, with continuous urban expansion, an additional 1,000 MLD will soon be required. To meet this demand, new treatment plants are being planned, along with around 20 new water tanks in developing localities. Existing tanks will also be expanded and upgraded to enhance storage capacity. DeshGujarat
