Orange, yellow alert for heavy rain, thunderstorms in Gujarat till Nov 1: IMD forecast

Ahmedabad: The state has been witnessing continuous unseasonal rainfall for the past three days as a depression persists over the Arabian Sea, about 500 km off the Veraval coast. Owing to this system, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rainfall forecast for the next seven days along with yellow and orange alerts for various parts of Gujarat over the next five days.

According to the IMD bulletin, during the next 24 hours, an orange alert has been issued for Gir Somnath and Diu, where heavy to very heavy rain is very likely at isolated places. A yellow alert for heavy rainfall has been issued for Bharuch, Surat, Navsari, Valsad, and the Union Territories of Daman and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, as well as for Porbandar, Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar, and Devbhumi Dwarka.

On October 29, Amreli and Bhavnagar districts are under an orange alert, while Bharuch, Surat, Dang, Navsari, Valsad, Tapi, Daman, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Botad, and Diu remain under a yellow alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall.

On October 30, Porbandar, Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Gir Somnath, and Diu are expected to witness heavy to very heavy rain and are under orange alert. Additionally, Anand, Panchmahal, Dahod, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Bharuch, Surat, Dang, Navsari, Valsad, Tapi, Daman, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Rajkot, Devbhumi Dwarka, and Botad are under a yellow alert for possible heavy rain.

On October 31, heavy to very heavy rain is very likely at isolated places in Porbandar, Junagadh, and Devbhumi Dwarka, which are under orange alert. Meanwhile, a yellow alert for heavy rainfall has been issued for Anand, Panchmahal, Dahod, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Bharuch, Surat, Dang, Navsari, Valsad, Tapi, Daman, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Gir Somnath, Botad, and Diu.

Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for the possibility of light thunderstorms with lightning and surface winds of 30–40 kmph, accompanied by light to moderate rain, likely at isolated places across all districts till November 1.

After that, on November 2 and 3, the IMD has forecast light to moderate rain across the state without any major weather warnings.

Synoptic Situation

  • Yesterday’s depression over the east-central Arabian Sea moved northeastwards at a speed of 12 kmph during the last six hours and was centered at 0830 hrs IST on October 28, 2025, over the same region near latitude 17.1°N and longitude 67.8°E, about 500 km south-southwest of Veraval (Gujarat), 580 km west-southwest of Mumbai (Maharashtra), 670 km west-northwest of Panjim (Goa), 850 km northwest of Aminidivi (Lakshadweep), and 890 km west-northwest of Mangalore (Karnataka). It is likely to move north-northeastwards across the east-central Arabian Sea during the next 36 hours.

  • An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northeast Rajasthan and the adjoining area between 3.1 km and 4.5 km above mean sea level.

  • A trough runs from the upper air cyclonic circulation associated with the depression over the east-central Arabian Sea to northeast Rajasthan across the northeast Arabian Sea and central Gujarat region at about 1.5 km above mean sea level.

  • The western disturbance that existed yesterday as a trough in middle tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level along Long. 75°E north of Lat. 32°N has now become insignificant for Gujarat. DeshGujarat
