Ashwini Vaishnaw on Gujarat visit; reviews progress of semiconductor plants

Gandhinagar: Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday reviewed the progress of four semiconductor chip plants in Gujarat that are currently at various stages of development.

The review meeting, held in Gandhinagar, was attended by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, and Science and Technology Minister Arjun Modhwadia. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Vaishnaw said all four projects are making “good progress.”

“The four semiconductor plants in Gujarat were reviewed in detail today. The CM, Deputy CM, IT Minister, and everyone else were present. The progress is good. Production from three plants will reach a good level in the next two to three months. Pilot production has already begun at the Kaynes and CG plants. Micron’s mini-plant has also started pilot production and is being ramped up. The fab being developed in Dholera is progressing well. In the time to come, Dholera will be a major hub for hi-tech manufacturing. The planning was discussed in detail today,” Vaishnaw said.

In a historic context, the government approved the first semiconductor unit proposal for Sanand in June 2023. So far, 10 semiconductor manufacturing projects worth over ₹1.60 lakh crore have been cleared across six states — Gujarat, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh.

Notably, a major milestone was achieved in August this year with the launch of the country’s first end-to-end Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) Pilot Line Facility in Sanand, Gujarat, where CG-Semi produced the first ‘Made in India’ chip.
