AMC to levy additional wastewater tax on 20 luxury hotels, including ITC Narmada, Hyatt, Taj Skyline
November 21, 2025
Ahmedabad: Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will impose an additional water waste charge on around 20 luxury hotels in the city, including ITC Narmada, Hyatt Regency, Taj Skyline, and Crowne Plaza. The new charge will apply to hotels generating over 10 kilolitres (KLD) of wastewater per day.
The additional fee will be calculated based on each hotel’s water consumption, with the user charge fixed at Rs 8 per kilolitre. These charges will be applied from the annual billing cycle of 2026–27 and are expected to increase the bills of affected hotels by Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh.
The proposal has been approved by the AMC Standing Committee. Chairman Devang Dani stated that the luxury hotels, including three- to five-star properties, release more than 10 KLD of wastewater daily. These hotels will now be liable to pay the additional charge for discharging wastewater into the civic drainage system.
He added that the new fee has been introduced to comply with World Bank requirements and to strengthen Ahmedabad’s wastewater management infrastructure.
The move is in line with conditions stipulated by the World Bank for financial assistance. Once implemented, AMC is expected to receive Rs 125 crore from the World Bank as part of a broader Rs 3,000-crore project aimed at constructing new sewage treatment plants (STPs), upgrading old drainage lines, and carrying out city-wide rehabilitation work.
While the measure will help AMC generate additional revenue, it may also increase costs for customers visiting these high-end hotels.
