Marine Police Seize Two Boats for Using LED Lights for Fishing off Porbandar Coast

Porbandar: In a crackdown on illegal fishing activities along the coast, the Marine Police have seized two boats that were using prohibited LED lights for night fishing in a sensitive coastal zone.

The two boats, identified as Gebi and Rehan, were intercepted near the Gosabara area. Fishermen on board were allegedly engaged in night fishing using unauthorized LED illumination. The Marine Police have registered a case against the operators for violating provisions of the Fisheries Act.

Officials said the operation is aimed not only at enforcing fisheries regulations but also at safeguarding national security, as illegal fishing in this region is considered a potential threat due to its sensitive history.

The area around Gosabara is classified as highly sensitive because RDX was recovered from the vicinity in 1993. The coastal stretch from Porbandar to Madhavpur has long been monitored closely, with several spots previously being used for smuggling gold and silver.

Marine Police, along with the Harbour Police and Miyani Police, are jointly conducting these operations, keeping past security incidents in mind to ensure protection of the country’s maritime borders.

The current drive against LED light–assisted fishing has been underway for the last seven to eight days. Before the latest seizure of Gebi and Rehan, two other boats and a small fishing raft had also been confiscated in recent days. DeshGujarat
