In-principle approval granted for GujSAIL terminal relocation: Report

Ahmedabad: Amid the major capacity expansion of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport, the GujSAIL complex located here is set to be relocated. As per a news report, the proposed site for the new terminal is opposite Terminal 1 (T1), on land currently occupied by a state-run facility, with the proposal now awaiting final clearance.

It is learnt that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has already earmarked the land and granted in-principle approval, while detailed coordination between the airport operator and state agencies is presently in progress.

The relocation forms part of a broader redevelopment plan aimed at creating space for a new integrated terminal building (NITB), intended to reduce congestion and significantly boost passenger handling capacity at Gujarat’s busiest airport.

As per the report, expansion is being expedited to meet infrastructure timelines associated with hosting major international events. In mid-July, the SVPI airport operator also submitted proposals to shift the air traffic control (ATC) tower and the general aviation terminal, as their current placement restricts the development of a unified terminal complex.

The proposed NITB will consolidate domestic and international operations under a single roof and is expected to nearly double the airport’s annual passenger capacity to two crore over the next decade, up from 1.2 crore in FY25. Once operational, the existing GujSAIL structure will be dismantled, releasing additional land for future airside and terminal expansion, the TOI report said. DeshGujarat
