Toll rates halved on sections of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway

Vadodara: The under-construction Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, India’s longest access-controlled highway linking New Delhi with Mumbai, will witness significant toll reductions in 2026. The Centre has cleared a cut of up to 50 per cent on certain stretches, particularly those where construction or lane expansion work is still underway. The decision is intended to lower travel expenses for motorists while supporting smoother traffic movement and improved logistics connectivity along the corridor.

Revised toll structure

The revised toll rates apply to sections of the expressway that remain under construction or are being widened from two lanes to four or more. Earlier, these incomplete stretches attracted relatively higher tolls because of diversions and unfinished infrastructure. Under the updated policy, tolls that were earlier charged at around 60 per cent of the standard rate on some sections have been brought down to 30 per cent. The cut offers immediate relief to private vehicles, commercial transporters, and freight operators. These reduced rates are likely to continue for up to a year or until the concerned sections become fully operational.

Why the cut is important

Lower tolls ease the cost of long-distance travel for private motorists passing through Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra. Commercial and logistics operators benefit from reduced operating expenses, which could help stabilise freight costs. The move also encourages continued use of the expressway despite ongoing construction, helping maintain traffic volumes. At the policy level, it fits into the government’s wider efforts to rationalise toll calculations on highways with elevated or complex structures.

What lies ahead

Although several stretches of the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway are still under development, the temporary toll relief is expected to support seamless travel and build user confidence. As construction work progresses and more sections are fully opened, toll rates may be revised again in line with the expressway’s final operational status. DeshGujarat
