Micron’s semiconductor plant in Sanand to begin commercial production by February-end: Vaishnaw

Davos/Sanand: Micron Technology’s $2.75-billion semiconductor manufacturing facility in Sanand is set to commence commercial production by the end of February, as per Union IT and Electronics Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
Speaking to The Economic Times on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Vaishnaw said pilot operations are currently underway at four semiconductor units across the country, with one facility set to transition to full-scale commercial production in the third week of February.
“I just met its CEO, and he’s very happy with the work that has happened in India. This is in Sanand, the Micron plant,” he told the newspaper.
Vaishnaw acknowledged that semiconductor manufacturing is among the most complex industrial processes, noting that the government has adopted a solution-driven approach to address challenges as they arise.
The minister also added that global semiconductor companies are increasingly viewing India not only as a design hub but also as a future centre for advanced chip manufacturing. He said discussions at a Davos roundtable revealed that some of the world’s most advanced chips, including two-nanometre nodes, are already being designed end-to-end in India.
“Now that manufacturing capability is coming up, they want to manufacture those chips in India,” Vaishnaw said. DeshGujarat
