AMC approves Thaltej lake development project
January 31, 2026
Ahmedabad: After remaining stalled for over 15 years, the Thaltej village lake development project has finally received approval, with the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) clearing the first phase of work.
The civic body has sanctioned a ₹4.48 crore tender to begin development of one of western Ahmedabad’s largest natural water bodies. The decision was approved at Friday’s standing committee meeting, under which 84,819 sq m of lake land will be taken up initially.
The first phase will focus on basic civil works, including construction of a compound wall to secure and demarcate the lake area. Located on Final Plot numbers 380 and 382, the lake spans around 1.38 lakh sq m and is comparable in size to major city lakes such as Vastrapur and Shilaj. The initial phase will also involve removal of encroachments and illegal constructions, with rehabilitation planned before demolition.
The project had remained delayed for years due to administrative hurdles, land record issues and jurisdictional changes after Thaltej’s merger into AMC limits. AMC officials said full-scale lake development will be taken up in subsequent phases once the site is cleared. DeshGujarat
