AMC Waste-to-Energy plant turns 2.96 lakh tonnes of garbage into electricity

Ahmedabad: With the Commonwealth Games scheduled to be held in Ahmedabad in 2030, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is intensifying efforts to develop green and sustainable infrastructure across the city. A key component of this push is the Waste-to-Energy plant under the Solid Waste Management Department, which is emerging as a major contributor to the city’s environmental and urban development goals.
Commissioned in October 2024 and operated by Jindal Urban Waste Management (Ahmedabad) Limited, the facility is transforming municipal waste into a valuable source of energy. Since its launch, the plant has processed 2.96 lakh tonnes of solid waste, significantly reducing open dumping and improving overall cleanliness in the city.
During the same period, the plant has generated 1,234.61 lakh units of electricity, which is being utilised for designated municipal purposes. AMC said the initiative has also delivered strong environmental benefits, including savings of 713.30 lakh kilograms of coal and a reduction of 1.93 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. Additionally, it has prevented 10,641.37 tonnes of methane gas from being released into the atmosphere.
The plant is also supporting water conservation through the reuse of treated water from the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), resulting in savings of 786.291 million litres of fresh water so far.
With lakhs of spectators and athletes expected to visit Ahmedabad during the 2030 Games, the city anticipates a sharp rise in waste generation during the event. Officials said the Waste-to-Energy plant will play a crucial role in ensuring rapid and scientific waste management, while also supplying electricity for sports venues, lighting and related infrastructure.
AMC said the project is a significant step towards positioning Ahmedabad as a ‘Green, Smart and Sustainable Sports City’ ahead of the Commonwealth Games 2030. DeshGujarat
