Surat RTO to launch AI-based driving test track on trial basis from Feb 2
January 31, 2026
Surat: The Surat Regional Transport Office (RTO) is set to take a major step towards modernising its driving licence testing process with the launch of an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based driving test track from Monday, February 2, 2026. After months of preparation, the RTO will begin trials of the new system, marking the end of the outdated manual software that has been in use for years.
Initially, the AI track will operate on an experimental basis, with around 500 two-wheeler and four-wheeler driving tests expected to be conducted over the course of a week. On Monday, both the existing method and the new AI-based technology will run simultaneously. However, test results will continue to be declared through the old system during the trial phase. Once the experimental tests are completed successfully, the AI-driven evaluation system is likely to be implemented permanently.
High-definition CCTV cameras and advanced sensors have been installed across the track to ensure accuracy. A technical team reached Surat on Thursday to complete the remaining work, and the system, including computer upgrades, is expected to be fully updated within the next two to three days.
Under the new system, every movement of the applicant’s vehicle will be tracked by AI during the test. Even minor driving errors or rule violations will be detected instantly, and the software will automatically determine whether the applicant has passed or failed. The result will also be displayed immediately on a signboard installed at the track.
Restrictions introduced to curb vehicle rental malpractice
To improve security and reduce interference from unauthorised elements, strict limits have been introduced under the AI-based system. A maximum of three tests can be conducted using the same vehicle in a single day, and no more than five tests can be taken in a month with one car. Officials believe this move will directly curb the practice of renting vehicles outside the test track for licence procurement and help eliminate malpractice.
Notably, the car rental business around Surat RTO has already been largely shut down for some time, and the new AI-driven system is expected to further strengthen transparency in the licence testing process. DeshGujarat
