Amreli: Two Asiatic lions died in separate incidents reported from the Amreli and Gir Somnath districts in the Saurashtra region of the state.
One lion, around two years old, fell into an open well in Kankot village of Liliya taluka. According to details, local residents spotted the fallen lion in the well and informed the forest department. Upon receiving the information, a forest department team, including the Liliya Range RFO, immediately reached the spot and brought the lion out of the well.
Preliminary findings revealed that the lion had fallen into a well constructed by the forest department and died at the site after being unable to climb out.
In another case, a lion aged between three and five years lost its life due to electrocution after coming into contact with an illegal electric fence installed by a farmer in Kaj village of Kodinar taluka. A forest department probe found that the farmer had set up the electric fence to protect crops from wild boars and nilgai, but the lion was accidentally trapped and electrocuted. Officials stated that the incident had taken place four days earlier.
The farmer, identified as Mansingh Zala, later surrendered before forest authorities, admitted his mistake, and was subsequently arrested and sent to jail. DeshGujarat
