SMC Deputy Commissioner Swati Desai Resigns
February 12, 2026
Surat: Swati Desai, Deputy Municipal Commissioner of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), has tendered her resignation to Municipal Commissioner Nagrajan M. The resignation, submitted on Wednesday, is presently under review and has not yet been accepted.
The unexpected development has sparked discussions within the civic administration, particularly in light of multiple officers stepping down before completing their tenures in recent years. Desai currently oversees crucial portfolios such as the accounts department and Smart City projects, and also heads the Udhna zone. The recent civic budget was formulated under her supervision and later presented by the Municipal Commissioner and the Chairman of the Standing Committee.
Over a career spanning nearly two decades with the SMC, Desai progressed from a clerical position to senior administrative roles. She joined the corporation as a clerk, pursued professional qualifications during her service, and earned her Company Secretary certification along with M.Com and MBA degrees. After serving 10 years in the clerical cadre, she was appointed Municipal Secretary in 2017 and later elevated to the post of Deputy Municipal Commissioner.
In her resignation letter, Desai attributed her decision to health and personal considerations. She stated that her children are still young and require greater attention, which influenced her decision. Confirming receipt of the letter, Commissioner Nagrajan said the matter is under consideration and that a decision will be taken following due process. DeshGujarat
