Six inmates die by suicide in Sabarmati Central Jail in two years; Govt explains reasons

Sabarmati: Six inmates died by suicide in Sabarmati Jail over a two-year period ending January 20, 2026, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, who also holds the Home portfolio, informed the state assembly.
The data was provided in response to a question, according to which four suicide cases occurred between January 21, 2024, and January 20, 2025, while two cases were reported between January 21, 2025, and January 20, 2026.
Primary Causes of Suicide
The government cited several psychological and health-related factors as the primary reasons behind the incidents. Key factors identified include:

Mental stress related to sentencing and uncertainty about future punishment.

Distress and depression resulting from denial of bail.

Physical and mental strain caused by chronic illnesses, particularly tuberculosis (TB).

Personal distress, including one case in which an inmate was emotionally affected after being jailed following a legal complaint filed by his girlfriend.
