Pet German Shepherd Attacks Court Official in Ahmedabad; Owner Also Assaults, Threatens Victim

Ahmedabad: A 41-year-old superintendent of the Ahmedabad Rural District Court was left badly shaken after he was allegedly attacked by his neighbour’s pet German Shepherd in the Nikol area. The situation escalated further when the dog’s owner allegedly threatened and assaulted him. The civic body today impounded the dog.

According to a complaint filed at Narol police station, Sunil Labana, a resident of Shahwadi in Narol and a superintendent at the Ahmedabad Rural District Court, had stepped out of his house for a routine walk last Sunday. As he was passing through his housing society, a pet German Shepherd owned by his neighbour, Vijay Parekh, allegedly began barking and suddenly lunged at him. The dog reportedly jumped on Labana, knocking him to the ground and leaving him severely frightened.

Hearing the commotion, Parekh rushed to the spot and pulled the dog away. However, a shaken Labana questioned him about allowing such a large dog to roam freely. He reportedly asked Parekh why the dog had been left loose and who would be responsible if something serious had happened.

The argument soon escalated, and Parekh allegedly began abusing Labana and physically assaulting him. Other residents of the society intervened and managed to calm the situation.

Later, when Labana decided to approach the police, Parekh allegedly arrived on his Activa scooter, hurled further abuses and threatened to kill him if he went ahead with the complaint.

Following the incident, Labana filed a formal complaint against Parekh at the Narol police station. Police have initiated legal action against the dog owner, Vijaybhai Ranchodbhai Parekh, for alleged negligence and failure to take adequate precautions to prevent harm to others. The case has been registered under Sections 115(2), 296(B), 351(3), and 291 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 176 related to negligence.

Furthermore, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), in a press release, stated that a joint team comprising a veterinary doctor, a sub-inspector, and a dog catcher from the Dog Complaint Cell under the CNCD Department, along with personnel from the SRP Police and Narol Police Station, visited the spot on March 6, 2026, to inspect the situation.

Officials said the dog had been vaccinated and the vaccination certificate issued by a veterinary doctor is valid until November 5, 2026. However, the dog was not registered with the civic authorities. Subsequently, the owner registered the pet dog by paying a fee of ₹2,000. The registration was completed under reference number CNCD/2025-26/10780 dated March 6, 2026.

Meanwhile, as a precautionary measure to prevent further incidents, the black-and-brown German Shepherd has been removed from the society by the owner and placed in a shelter under the supervision of the CNCD Department team. DeshGujarat
