Over 72% Water in Reservoirs, Sufficient Supply Available for Summer: Gujarat Govt

Ahmedabad: Owing to heavy and consistent rainfall during the 2025 monsoon, Gujarat’s major reservoirs currently hold sufficient water, ensuring adequate drinking and irrigation supply for the coming summer, the Water Resources Department said.

Officials said the state received over 128% of the average rainfall this monsoon, leading to higher storage levels in dams across Gujarat. As of March 5, 2026, the total water stored in the state’s main reservoirs stands at 6,46,556 MCFT, which is about 72.49% of total capacity.

The department said the situation is better than last year, with overall storage about 4% higher than the same period in 2025. The Sardar Sarovar reservoir, considered the lifeline of Gujarat, currently holds over 2.47 lakh MCFT, which is more than 74% of its capacity, slightly higher than last year.

Region-wise, the highest storage has been recorded in South Gujarat, with over 2.34 lakh MCFT, followed by Central Gujarat (65,179 MCFT), Saurashtra (53,621 MCFT), North Gujarat (41,842 MCFT) and Kutch (4,392 MCFT).

On the same date last year, total storage in the state was 6,09,459 MCFT (68.34%), including 2,41,952 MCFT in Sardar Sarovar, officials said, adding that the improved storage this year will help maintain sufficient drinking water supply during summer.

Gujarat has a total of 207 reservoirs, including 141 in Saurashtra, 15 in North Gujarat, 17 in Central Gujarat, 13 in South Gujarat and 20 in Kutch, along with the Sardar Sarovar dam. DeshGujarat
