Ahmedabad: The Gujarat government on Wednesday informed the Assembly that 1,966 cattle owners in the Gir region of Amreli district were paid Rs 1.43 crore as compensation for livestock killed by lions, leopards and other wild animals.

Forest minister Arjun Modhwadia shared the details during the ongoing budget session, stating that the payments were made to owners who lost cattle in frequent wildlife attacks reported from the Gir region.

According to data tabled in the House, 920 cattle owners received Rs 67.91 lakh in 2023, while 965 owners were paid Rs 69.40 lakh in 2025, an increase of about 4.9%. In January 2025 alone, 81 cattle owners received Rs 5.50 lakh as compensation.

Under existing norms, the government pays up to Rs 50,000 for the death of a cow or buffalo in wild animal attacks, and up to Rs 40,000 for camel deaths. DeshGujarat
