Gujarat govt note on Gas and Kerosene Situation

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government today in a note stated that availability of domestic LPG in the country is gradually improving as the Government of India has significantly increased LPG production to meet rising demand, and the buffer stock of LPG cylinders for household use is strengthening day by day, helping stabilize supply across states.

In addition to improving LPG availability, the Central and State governments have also initiated supplementary arrangements to ensure uninterrupted fuel supply in both rural and urban areas amid the prevailing geo-political situation.

Additional Kerosene for Rural Areas

To support rural households, the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has allocated an additional 1452 kilolitres (KL) of kerosene to Gujarat for domestic fuel use. The allocation was made through a communication dated March 12, 2026, and the fuel will primarily be used for cooking and lighting purposes in rural areas where LPG supply may face temporary constraints.

Under the distribution plan, 36 KL (36,000 litres) of kerosene will be allotted to each district Collector. The Collectors will then distribute the kerosene among eligible beneficiaries.

As per the guidelines, each rural family can receive up to five litres of kerosene, while institutions may receive up to 25 litres depending on their needs.

Priority in distribution will be given to:

  • Families living in rural and remote areas.

  • Children residing in school hostels and institutions running mid-day meal programmes.

  • Registered old-age homes, food banks and other service organisations.

  • Facilities preparing meals for workers in construction or industrial units.

  • Government and private social institutions that are fully dependent on LPG for cooking fuel.

PNG Priority in Urban Areas

For urban regions, officials have highlighted that Gujarat has an extensive Piped Natural Gas (PNG) network, and adequate supplies are available. PNG remains the preferred fuel for both domestic and commercial consumers, and citizens are encouraged to opt for PNG connections wherever the network is available.

Advisory for Citizens

The government has reassured citizens that petrol, diesel and LPG stocks remain sufficient across the state. However, residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary panic booking of LPG cylinders.

To manage demand and reduce pressure on booking systems, customers have been advised to maintain a minimum gap of 25 days between two cylinder bookings in urban areas and 45 days in rural areas.

Authorities have also suggested several energy-saving practices, including:

  • Using pressure cookers to reduce cooking gas consumption.

  • Adopting efficient cooking methods such as soaking and steaming pulses.

  • Increasing the use of solar cookers and other alternative energy sources.

  • Maintaining air-conditioner temperatures at 25°C or higher to conserve electricity.
