Gandhinagar: With the aim of increasing the irrigation area in the state and raising groundwater levels, the Gujarat government is undertaking several water storage projects. As part of these efforts, construction of a weir on the Mahi River at Poicha village in Vadodara district is currently in progress at an estimated cost of ₹349 crore, the state government informed the Assembly.
The project will help raise the water level in the surrounding region and provide irrigation benefits to nearly 29,000 acres of land, Water Resources and Water Supply Minister Ishwar Singh Patel said while replying to a question by an MLA in the Legislative Assembly.
Providing further details, the minister said the proposed weir will be 67 metres long and 11 metres high. Once completed, the structure will lead to water storage extending up to 14 kilometres upstream, resulting in an increase in groundwater levels and improved irrigation facilities in parts of Vadodara, Kheda and Anand districts.
