Flight Tickets Costlier: IndiGo Imposes Fuel Surcharge on Domestic & Overseas Routes

New Delhi: IndiGo has announced the introduction of a fuel surcharge on domestic as well as international routes, effective from 00:01 hrs on March 14, 2026, citing a sharp rise in aviation fuel prices due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

According to the airline, the decision comes after a steep surge in fuel prices in the region, with the Jet Fuel Monitor of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) indicating an increase of more than 85 percent. Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) constitutes a major portion of airline operating costs, and the sudden rise is expected to significantly impact airline operations and network costs, including those of IndiGo.

The airline stated that although fully offsetting the fuel price hike would require a substantial increase in fares, it has opted to introduce a moderate fuel charge to reduce the burden on passengers.

Fuel surcharge per sector (effective March 14, 2026):

Route Fuel Charge (INR)
Within India (Domestic) ₹425
Indian Subcontinent ₹425
Middle East ₹900
South East Asia & China ₹1800
Africa & West Asia ₹1800
Europe ₹2300

The surcharge will apply to all new bookings made from 00:01 hrs on March 14, 2026.

IndiGo expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to passengers, stating that the move has been necessitated by a sudden and substantial change in the operating environment. The airline added that it will continue to monitor fuel price trends and make further adjustments if required. DeshGujarat
