Gujarat Govt OKays ₹119 Crore Dantiwada–Sipu Dam Interlinking Project

Gandhinagar: In a major decision aimed at permanently addressing irrigation and agriculture-related problems in Banaskantha district, the state government has granted administrative approval to the canal project linking the Dantiwada and Sipu dams, with an estimated cost of around ₹119 crore.

Plan to stop water wastage, fill Sipu dam

For a long time, it has been observed that during the monsoon season the inflow of rainwater into the Sipu dam remains low, due to which the reservoir often fails to fill. On the other hand, excess water from the Dantiwada dam overflows during heavy rainfall.

Under the new project, surplus water from Dantiwada dam will be diverted to Sipu dam through a canal, which is expected to prevent wastage of water and improve storage capacity in the region.

6,000 hectares to get irrigation benefit

The interlinking project is expected to significantly increase the irrigated area in Banaskantha district. Irrigation facilities will be made available to nearly 6,000 hectares of cultivable land.

Farmers in villages dependent on the Dantiwada and Sipu dams have welcomed the decision, as the project is expected to ensure adequate water supply for Rabi as well as summer crops, providing long-term relief from recurring water shortages. DeshGujarat
