Key Highlights of Gujarat’s Infrastructure Push in March 2026

Gandhinagar: March 2026 proved to be a major month for Gujarat’s development, with the inauguration and completion of several multi-billion-rupee projects across transportation, industry, and social infrastructure.

Expressways and Road Connectivity

The centerpiece of the month’s achievements was the formal opening of the Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway, a project conceptualized and inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Notably longer than the existing Ahmedabad–Vadodara Expressway, the new route has already begun transforming travel patterns, significantly reducing travel time for commuters heading to Salangpur, Bhavnagar, and coastal destinations such as Diu and Somnath.

Additionally, the city of Patan received its new GSRTC bus port, a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project completed after nine years of development.

Industrial and Technology Hubs

Dholera’s emergence as a global industrial hub was further strengthened with the operational launch of Phase 1 of the Kaynes semiconductor plant. The region also witnessed the launch of a sounding rocket by a private firm, aimed at fostering scientific innovation and testing satellite launch capabilities.

In the energy sector, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation commenced gas monetization from its Daman offshore project, with commercial supply reaching Hazira to help ease the national gas shortage.

Additionally, British chemical firm Croda International opened a £55 million plant in Dahej, while Wipro inaugurated its new office in GIFT City.

Railways and Urban Transit

The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) reached full completion this month, a development expected to transform goods transportation by shifting heavy truck traffic to rail. Supporting this, a new Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal was commissioned at Gangadhara.

Other major railway developments include:

  • Commissioning of the Kavach safety system on the Vadodara–Nagda section
  • Commencement of Surat Metro trial runs on a 6.5 km viaduct
  • Introduction of a broad-gauge electrified line between Asarwa and Khedbrahma, offering a potential new route to North India
  • Successful trial run of the Amreli–Khijadiya line, bringing Amreli onto the broad-gauge network

Social and Tourism Infrastructure

In Surat, Phase 1 of the Dumas Seafront opened to strong public response, emerging as a major attraction for local tourism.

Meanwhile, Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital saw the completion of a significant social initiative—an eight-storey “Rain Basera” (shelter) facility with 800 beds and a canteen, offering accommodation to patients’ families at a nominal charge of ₹80 per day.

For rail passengers, Vadodara Railway Station introduced a private digital waiting lounge equipped with sleeping pods and conference rooms.

Other Notable Developments

  • Renewable Energy: Jangar village in Amreli was declared 100% solar-powered
  • Water Management: The state government reported that 30 out of 34 packages of the SAUNI Yojana have been completed
  • Culture: The Samrat Samprati Museum was inaugurated in Gandhinagar, showcasing Jain heritage
  • Sports: Gujarat successfully hosted the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Final at the Narendra Modi Stadium, supported by enhanced metro and special train services to manage the large influx of international visitors

Future Projects and Upcoming Developments

Gujarat’s development momentum is set to continue with a strong pipeline of upcoming infrastructure, industrial, and connectivity projects announced or approved during the month.

In the transport sector, several key road and rail projects are in the pipeline, including a ₹945 crore six-lane high-speed corridor between Surat and Navsari, and the expansion of NH-48 and NH-56 corridors to improve regional connectivity. The ₹1,500 crore Vadodara Ring Road project is also progressing, while new flyovers and junction upgrades have been planned across Ahmedabad to ease urban congestion.

Railway infrastructure is set for further expansion with projects such as the Ranavav Integrated Coaching Depot, the Taranga Hill–Ambaji–Abu Road rail line, and multiple rail overbridges and line-doubling works across the state. Plans are also underway to introduce new services, including the Ahmedabad–Patna Amrit Bharat Express, and explore Vistadome coaches in Gir. Additionally, fibre optic infrastructure over 1,600 km of railway network will enhance operational efficiency.

Urban mobility will receive a major boost with the planned addition of nearly 2,000 electric buses in Ahmedabad and expansion of metro capacity with new trainsets expected from mid-2026. Multimodal transport hubs and modern bus ports are also proposed to strengthen last-mile connectivity.

In aviation and logistics, Gujarat is likely to see the development of up to 11 greenfield airports under the UDAN scheme, along with new training facilities at Keshod and improved regional air connectivity, including international routes from Ahmedabad. A satellite launchpad proposed between Kodinar and Diu also signals the state’s ambitions in the space sector.

Industrial growth remains a key focus, with major investments such as Maruti Suzuki’s ₹10,189 crore expansion at its Gujarat plant and emerging semiconductor and AI infrastructure projects, including a sovereign AI park and GPU-based computing ecosystem. Nestlé India and other global firms are also expanding manufacturing presence in the state.

Tourism and social infrastructure projects are also advancing, including the near-completion of the Rajkot Lion Safari Park, development of heritage circuits such as the Dandi route, and upgrades to pilgrimage and coastal tourism infrastructure. Large-scale housing initiatives under PMAY-G and healthcare projects like the Bhavnagar Medicity further highlight the state’s focus on inclusive development.

Additionally, key environmental and governance initiatives—such as statewide air quality monitoring systems and digital tracking of public assets—are expected to modernize urban management and sustainability efforts. DeshGujarat
