2.5-month-old girl’s body unearthed in suspected dosa batter food poisoning case in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: In a case involving the deaths of two minor girls in the Chandkheda area of the city, in a suspected food poisoning incident, authorities on Tuesday exhumed the body of a two-and-a-half-month-old infant in the presence of a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team for postmortem.

The body was exhumed because the family had earlier conducted the last rites without informing the police. With the deaths of the two girls under suspicious circumstances, Chandkheda police have registered a case of accidental death and initiated a probe.

According to police, the incident came to light on April 5 after the family alleged that their health deteriorated after consuming dosas prepared from ready-made batter brought from Ghanshyam Dairy in the Chandkheda area.

The father of the deceased girls, Vipul Kumar Gaurishankar Prajapati, told police that his three-year-old daughter, Mishti, had died. When questioned, he stated that on the evening of April 1, 2026, he had purchased batter from Ghanshyam Dairy located on IOC Road. Dosas were prepared from it and consumed by the family. The next day, April 2, dosas were again made from the same batter and consumed, after which their health deteriorated due to suspected food poisoning.

Initially, they took general treatment and, upon feeling temporary relief, did not visit a hospital. However, as their condition worsened, they sought treatment at KD Hospital. Later, on April 4, his two-and-a-half-month-old daughter suddenly died. After her death, the family performed the last rites and buried her. However, the next day, on April 5, the three-year-old girl, Mishti, also passed away.

However, it is not clear how the infant died, as generally solid food is not given to such a small child.

In this connection, an accidental death case has been registered at Chandkheda Police Station. On Monday, the postmortem of the deceased three-year-old girl was carried out by a panel of doctors. The FSL team and the Food and Drugs Department also conducted inspections at the residence of the deceased and at Ghanshyam Dairy, and collected samples of the batter. Today, the body of the younger child was exhumed to carry out the postmortem procedure.

Meanwhile, the parents of the deceased children, Vimal and Bhavana Prajapati, are currently undergoing treatment at KD Hospital.

The dairy owner, Ketan Patel, denied any lapse, stating that the same batch of batter was sold to multiple customers without complaints. “We sell 100–125 kg of batter daily, and no other customer has reported any issue,” he said, adding that they will cooperate in the investigation.

Further investigation is underway, and authorities are awaiting forensic and postmortem reports to determine the exact cause of death. DeshGujarat
