A Comprehensive Review of Gujarat’s Major Infrastructure Related Deliveries in March 2026
April 07, 2026
Japan K Pathak, Gandhinagar: March 2026 stood as a landmark month for Gujarat, witnessing the culmination and delivery of numerous high-impact infrastructure, industrial, and social projects. From the formal opening of the Dholera Expressway to the launch of semiconductor plants and the completion of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, the month showcased the state’s rapid transformation.
Transforming Connectivity: The Dholera Expressway and Regional Integration
One of the most significant achievements of the month was the formal opening of the Dholera Expressway, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Spanning a length greater than the Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway, this project was designed not just for the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) but to revolutionize regional travel.
The expressway has effectively brought Bhavnagar out of its geographical isolation. Previously considered a “pocketed corner” due to the Gulf of Khambhat, Bhavnagar is now a “through” destination, significantly reducing travel time to Ahmedabad to approximately two to two-and-a-half hours. Furthermore, the expressway has become a preferred alternative route for tourists heading to Somnath and Diu, as well as devotees traveling to Salangpur. In the future, this expressway will provide seamless connectivity to the developing Dholera Airport, offering a “plug and play” environment for mega-industries such as defense and aircraft manufacturing.
Industrial and Tech Milestones: Semiconductors and GIFT City
Gujarat continued to cement its status as a tech leader with the opening of the Kaynes Semiconductor plant in Sanand. This facility represents a major stride in India’s semiconductor mission, with products destined for international markets like California.
In addition to high-tech manufacturing:
- GIFT City welcomed a new Wipro office, further boosting its status as a financial services hub.
- The British specialty chemicals firm Croda opened a £55 million facility in Dahej, highlighting continued foreign direct investment in the state’s chemical sector.
Railway Modernization and Logistics
The logistics sector saw unparalleled progress in March 2026. The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) achieved full completion, with final trial runs on the JNPT–Saphale section being successful. This corridor is a “huge achievement” for Gujarat and Rajasthan, allowing for much faster and safer goods transport. A notable technical milestone was the operation of the first 25-tonne axle load freight train from Gujarat to Haryana, which offers a 15-20% load advantage over conventional freight trains.
Other key railway developments included:
- The commissioning of the ‘Kavach’ safety system on the Vadodara–Nagda section, ensuring high-level protection for passenger and goods trains.
- The Khedbrahma–Asarva Broad Gauge electrified line became operational, potentially opening a new alternative rail route to Delhi via Abu Road.
- The Surat Metro achieved a landmark with the completion of an 8.5 km viaduct, with trial runs now underway.
- The reopening of the Dabhoi–Miyagam line after seven years of broad-gauge conversion, restoring essential connectivity to Central Gujarat.
Social and Urban Infrastructure
In the realm of public services, several major “social infrastructure” projects were delivered:
- Civil Hospital Rain Basera: An eight-story facility with over 800 beds was opened to house patients’ relatives for a nominal fee of 80 rupees per 24 hours.
- Patan GSRTC Bus Port: After nine years in development, this state-of-the-art bus station was finally opened under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
- Vadodara Railway Station Lounge: A privately operated, digital waiting lounge was launched, featuring sleeping pods, internet access, and conference rooms to provide an “airport-like experience” for rail travelers.
- Dumas Sea Front: Phase 1 of the Dumas Sea Front in Surat was opened to an overwhelming public response, with citizens flocking to the area for yoga, music, and leisure.
Energy, Science, and Culture
Gujarat’s commitment to sustainable and innovative growth was evident in several localized projects:
- Jangar Village in Amreli was declared 100% solar-powered, with over 350 houses equipped with rooftop panels.
- Science and Tourism: The Tropic of Cancer Science Park at Salal in Sabarkantha was inaugurated to capitalize on the geographic significance of the location. Meanwhile, an Ahmedabad-based startup successfully launched Gujarat’s first sounding rocket from Dholera.
- Cultural Preservation: The Samrat Samprati Museum in Koba was inaugurated by the Prime Minister, featuring seven galleries dedicated to rare Jain artifacts. Additionally, the reconstruction of the historic Bhujiyo Kotho in Jamnagar was completed and opened to tourists.
Strategic Resource Management
The state government reported significant progress on the SAUNI Yojana, an ambitious project to link dams via pipelines to provide Narmada water to the Saurashtra region. As of March 2026, 30 out of 34 packages have been completed, with only four remaining under progress. In the energy sector, ONGC began gas monetization from the Daman Offshore Project, sending crucial output to Hazira to help mitigate the country’s commercial gas crisis.
Finally, the month was capped off by a global sporting event as Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium hosted the T20 World Cup Final. The success of this event was attributed to the robust infrastructure in place, including the Ahmedabad Metro, special trains made possible by the DFC, and a significantly expanded hotel capacity.
