Bhim Vakani, Father of ‘Taarak Mehta’ Fame Disha & Mayur Vakani, Passes Away at 84
April 07, 2026
Ahmedabad: Veteran Gujarati playwright and actor Bhim Vakani passed away today at the age of 84. He was the father of popular television actors Disha Vakani, famed for her role as Daya Ben, and Mayur Vakani, who plays Sundarlal in the long-running sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah.
Bhim Vakani passed away at his residence in the Shyamal area of Ahmedabad after a prolonged illness. His son, Mayur Vakani, said that his father had suffered a paralysis attack approximately one-and-a-half years ago.
The atmosphere at the Vakani residence was sombre as family members and close friends gathered to pay their final respects. Both Disha and Mayur were visibly grief-stricken during the funeral proceedings. Mayur Vakani performed the last rites and carried his father’s mortal remains for the final journey.
Vakani was well known for his contributions to theatre, television, and cinema. Under his banner, Vakani Theatres, he produced, directed, and acted in numerous plays in Ahmedabad, including Mangalfera and Pahelo Sago. He also played a key role in shaping the careers of his children, often casting Disha in small roles as a child artist in his productions.
Beyond theatre, Vakani made notable contributions to Indian cinema. He portrayed Kazi Saheb in the Oscar-nominated film Lagaan and appeared in films such as Swades and Lajja. He also made a guest appearance in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah.
Vakani’s influence extended beyond entertainment into social awareness initiatives. Alongside his daughter Disha, he travelled across rural Gujarat, performing awareness plays on issues such as “Daru Chhodo” (Quit Alcohol) and “Beti Bachao” (Save the Girl Child). Disha had credited these experiences in open-air rural settings with significantly shaping her acting skills. DeshGujarat
