PM Modi to Inaugurate ₹4,950-Crore Power Infrastructure Projects in Gujarat
June 04, 2026
Surat: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Surat on June 5, coinciding with World Environment Day, to inaugurate four major power infrastructure projects worth ₹4,950.39 crore undertaken by the Gujarat government’s Department of Energy and Petrochemicals and Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd.
The flagship project is the ₹4,546-crore Transmission Network Expansion Project in Surat and Navsari districts, which is expected to significantly enhance power transfer capacity between Gujarat and Maharashtra. The project will strengthen the state’s transmission network by increasing the Available Transmission Capacity (ATC) under the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) and facilitate the evacuation of renewable energy generated in the Khavda region.
A key highlight of the project is the commissioning of the world’s largest digital substation at Navsari, a major milestone for India’s power transmission sector. The project also includes a 765 kV double-circuit transmission line from Navsari to Padghe in Maharashtra and 400 kV double-circuit transmission lines connecting Navsari with Magarwada and Kala. These facilities will enable reliable, high-capacity power flow between Gujarat and Maharashtra while supporting the seamless transmission of renewable energy.
The Prime Minister will also inaugurate a ₹324.19-crore power distribution infrastructure project in Valsad district, implemented by Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company Limited (DGVCL) under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). The project includes the installation of AB cabling, new transformers, augmentation of transformer capacity, replacement of old conductors and feeder bifurcation works to strengthen the distribution network.
The upgraded infrastructure is expected to reduce power outages, low-voltage issues, transformer overloading, conductor breakages and weather-related disruptions. The project will improve the reliability and quality of power supply while enhancing public safety. Around 5.98 lakh residents of Valsad district are expected to benefit from the initiative.
In addition, Modi will inaugurate the 66 kV Wankala–Okha substation in Choryasi taluka of Surat district, developed at a cost of ₹48.20 crore. The substation is expected to benefit approximately 23,357 electricity consumers in the surrounding region.
Another project to be dedicated to the public is the 66 kV Dhamni substation in Dharampur taluka of Valsad district, constructed at a cost of ₹32 crore. The facility will serve around 5,064 electricity consumers across 13 villages located within an 8-km radius.
According to the state government, the projects will further strengthen South Gujarat’s power infrastructure, improve grid reliability and ensure better-quality electricity supply for consumers across the region. DeshGujarat
