Morbi Well’s Rippling Water Not Linked to Earthquake, Say Experts

Morbi: Residents of Virparda village in Morbi district were left baffled after water in a well began rippling continuously, sparking speculation that the unusual phenomenon could be linked to an earthquake.

Videos of the shaking well quickly went viral on social media, attracting curious onlookers. However, officials have ruled out any seismic connection.

District Geologist JS Vadher said preliminary findings indicate the movement is not related to an earthquake or tectonic activity. Instead, recent heavy rainfall upstream appears to have recharged groundwater, forcing trapped air out through pores and fractures in underground rocks.

“This is not seismic activity. Prima facie, it appears that heavy upstream rainfall has recharged groundwater, and air trapped in the pore spaces of rocks is being released, causing the disturbance in the well,” Vadher said.

Officials explained that as rainwater seeps into underground rock formations, it increases groundwater pressure and pushes out trapped air, creating bubbles and continuous ripples that make the well appear to shake.

The explanation is backed by the absence of any recorded tremors in the area. Authorities also consulted the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) in Gandhinagar, which reportedly confirmed that no seismic activity had been detected and there is no active fault line near the site.

Even so, the administration has ordered a detailed scientific investigation. Morbi District Collector Swapnil Khare said the Gujarat government has been informed, and a team of experts from Gandhinagar will inspect the well.

“We have informed the Gujarat government, and a team from Gandhinagar will visit the site for further investigation,” Khare said.

Experts say such groundwater-related disturbances, though uncommon, can occur during periods of intense rainfall and rapid aquifer recharge. Besides trapped air, scientists will examine whether fluctuations in groundwater pressure, the well’s depth and shape, or underground fractures and cavities contributed to the unusual movement.

The investigation is expected to determine the exact geological cause and reassure residents who feared the rippling water was an early sign of an earthquake. DeshGujarat
