Newly opened Makarba overbridge meets traffic jam on one end; AMC to introduce capsule-type junction design

Ahmedabad: Traffic congestion has been reported at the Corporate Road junction side end of the newly constructed railway overbridge at Makarba, a day after its inauguration, prompting Vejalpur MLA Amit Thaker to seek the installation of traffic signals and regular deployment of traffic police at the junctions.

The overbridge, constructed at a cost of ₹98.60 crore over LC-24 on the Ahmedabad-Botad railway line, connects Makarba, Vejalpur, Corporate Road and the S.G. Highway. It was e-inaugurated by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Thursday.

The bridge begins near the Torrent Power office in Makarba and descends directly onto the Corporate Road junction, where significant traffic congestion has been reported since the overbridge was opened. The situation becomes more challenging during evening peak hours when traffic volumes increase.

According to Thaker, a site visit after the inauguration found heavy traffic movement at both ends of the bridge, particularly near Corporate Road and the S.G. Highway. He said vehicles were getting stuck at the junctions, resulting in congestion during peak hours.

Thaker has written to Ahmedabad Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot, requesting regular deployment of traffic police personnel at the Makarba end to ensure smooth traffic management and road safety.

“In addition, a traffic signal should be installed at the Corporate Road end, along with daily deployment of traffic police personnel, so that vehicle movement can be properly regulated and the traffic problems faced during peak hours can be effectively addressed,” the MLA wrote.

Meanwhile, responding to the concerns, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) said a suitable capsule-type design has been planned at the junction to improve its overall appearance, functionality and traffic flow. DeshGujarat
