Ahmedabad Metro Phase 3: GMRC begins tender process for 58.5-km elevated network with 43 stations

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Metro expansion is set to gain pace as Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) has invited tenders for the construction of around 58.5 km of elevated viaduct under Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase III.

The seven tenders currently under process together cover approximately 58.527 km of elevated viaduct and 43 elevated stations across different stretches of the Phase III network. The packages include major corridors connecting Naranpura, Nehrunagar, Vadaj, Bapunagar, APMC, New Faisal Nagar, Shilaj, Badrabad, Thaltej Gam and Godhavi.

The largest of the packages involves the construction of a 12.527-km elevated viaduct from Shilaj Circle to Badrabad Dead End, including seven elevated stations. Another package covers a 10.26-km stretch from Thaltej Gam Dead End to Godhavi Dead End, with eight elevated stations.

The other five tenders will cover the circular route of the metro in the city. One package covers 11.04 km from Vishal Nagar West to Bapunagar North, with 10 elevated stations. The other tenders cover an 8.68-km viaduct from Naranpura to Nehrunagar, with five stations; a 6.56-km stretch from APMC to New Faisal Nagar, with five stations; a 4.84-km viaduct from Veer Savarkar Sports Complex to Arihant Nagar, with five stations; and a 4.62-km stretch from Dudheshwar to Vadaj, with three stations.

Seven packages for Phase III

Veer Sawarkar Sports Complex to Arihant Nagar 4.84 km 5
Dudheshwar to Vadaj 4.62 km 3

Shilaj Circle to Badrabad Dead End 12.527 km 7
Thaltej Gam Dead End to Godhavi Dead End 10.26 km 8
Total 58.527 km 43

The tendering comes as the proposed Phase III expansion moves ahead with pre-construction activities. The expansion of the Thaltej Gam-Sanathal corridor towards Badrabad has already received clearance from the Public Investment Board (PIB) and is awaiting final approval from the Union Cabinet.

GMRC has already begun preparatory work to compress the implementation timeline. Detailed Design Consultants have been appointed, while geotechnical investigations and utility-related works are under way. Four utility-shifting packages worth Rs 35.81 crore have also been initiated, covering services such as water, electricity, gas, sewerage and telecommunications.

The Phase III network is planned to improve connectivity to emerging residential, commercial and institutional areas while providing multiple interchange points with Ahmedabad’s existing metro network.

Thaltej Gam-Godhavi-Badrabad corridor

The expansion is also significant from the perspective of Ahmedabad’s future regional connectivity. The alignment from Shilaj towards Badrabad is planned to run parallel to the Sardar Patel Ring Road, passing through areas including Bopal Crossroads and Shantipura Crossroads before reaching Badrabad, near the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway.

The extension towards Badrabad is expected to bring the metro network closer to the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway and provide the foundation for a future extension towards the upcoming Dholera International Airport.

Meanwhile, the Thaltej Gam-Godhavi section will also connect the metro network to the South West Ahmedabad Sports Arena (SWASA) at Godhavi. The alignment is planned through the rapidly developing canal road belt near Shilaj Crossroads and will subsequently run parallel to the railway line towards SWASA, which is being built as part of the city’s plan to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympic Games bids.

Ahmedabad’s first loop metro route

Additionally, the Vadaj circular corridor, for which five tenders are under process, is planned to create Ahmedabad’s first loop metro route across the western, eastern and southern parts of the city.

The circular alignment is proposed to pass through areas including Akhbarnagar, Naranpura, Shivranjani, Shyamal Crossroads, Jivraj Park, APMC, Pirana Crossroads, Cozy Hotel, Isanpur, Amraiwadi, Rakhial Road, Saijpur Bogha, Kalapinagar, Girdharnagar and Dudheshwar before returning to Vadaj.

Major interchange stations have been proposed at Gujarat University, APMC, Amraiwadi and Vadaj, allowing passengers to transfer between the existing East-West and North-South metro corridors and the new Phase III network.

With the latest tenders covering nearly 59 km of elevated viaduct, Ahmedabad Metro Phase III has now moved further from the planning stage towards construction, subject to the completion of the remaining approvals and statutory procedures. DeshGujarat
