AMC Makes Rapid Testing Kits Mandatory for Eligible Sweet Shops

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has instructed traders involved in the manufacture of sweets, mawa and farsan, with an annual turnover exceeding ₹5 lakh, to keep and use rapid testing kits to check food adulteration.

The announcement was made by Standing Committee Chairman Kamleshbhai Patel following the committee’s weekly meeting held on Thursday, October 29, 2026.

Patel said ensuring the quality of food products and protecting public health was particularly important during the Diwali festival. The directive comes amid reports of counterfeit and inedible substances being sold as mawa, or milk solids.

The rapid testing kits can be used for preliminary checks of mawa quality and to detect the presence of starch in food items. Valued at approximately ₹3,000 each, the kits are intended to help traders identify possible adulteration before selling products to consumers.

According to the chairman, around 350 people have acquired these kits so far.

The AMC Health Department has issued instructions requiring sweet manufacturers and traders dealing in mawa and farsan with an annual turnover of more than ₹5 lakh to keep and use the kits.

The initiative aims to facilitate preliminary food quality checks and help prevent the sale of adulterated or unfit food products during the festive season. DeshGujarat
