AMC to Reduce Diwali Illuminations in Ahmedabad to Save Electricity
October 29, 2026
Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to reduce festive illuminations across the city during Diwali this year as part of efforts to conserve electricity.
The decision was announced by Standing Committee Chairman Kamleshbhai Patel following the committee’s weekly meeting held on Thursday, October 29, 2026.
Patel said the civic body would restrict decorative lighting to seven locations this year, compared with the multiple locations illuminated in previous years. These will include six bridges over the Sabarmati River and the temple of Goddess Bhadrakali, the city’s presiding deity.
Earlier, festive lighting was installed at several locations across Ahmedabad, including bridges, traffic circles, underpasses and government buildings.
The AMC has also decided to reduce the duration of the illuminations. While the lights were traditionally switched on from 7 pm to 7 am, this year they will remain on from 7 pm to 1 am.
However, the lighting schedule will be extended during Diwali and the New Year, when the illuminations will remain on throughout the night.
The decision was among the issues discussed at the Standing Committee meeting, which also covered city development projects, public health, water management and safety arrangements. DeshGujarat
