Ahmedabad-Mehsana Highway to Become 8-Lane; PM Lays Foundation Stone for Rs 2,600 Cr Project

Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday laid the foundation stone for the upgradation and widening of the Ahmedabad–Mehsana Highway (State Highway-41) from four lanes to eight lanes at an estimated cost of ₹2,600 crore. The project is expected to improve connectivity between Ahmedabad and North Gujarat by reducing travel time and ensuring safer and smoother traffic movement.

The project will cover an approximately 50-km stretch from Adalaj to Palavasna Circle in Mehsana district. Once completed, it is expected to benefit commuters and residents of Mehsana, Patan and Banaskantha districts while addressing growing traffic congestion on one of the key highways connecting Ahmedabad with North Gujarat.

The existing highway was originally developed as a four-lane road in 1999, with service roads on both sides. According to an earlier assessment by the state government, more than one lakh vehicles use the route every day, making its expansion necessary to accommodate rising traffic volumes.

Under the project, the main carriageway will be widened to eight lanes, while seven-metre-wide service roads will be developed on both sides. Existing bridges, pipe culverts and box culverts along the route will also be widened to accommodate the expanded highway.

A key component of the project is the construction of a 6.10-km elevated corridor through Kalol city. The corridor will comprise five overbridges and flyovers and is intended to allow highway traffic to pass through the city without disrupting local traffic movement.

The project also includes the construction of eight flyovers at various locations. Two will be built at Shertha, while six others are planned at Rajpur Bhasaria, Jagudan and Mewad, along with flyover structures at Vaghara on the Kalol–Chhatral stretch.

Additionally, eight underpasses will be constructed at locations including Shertha, IFFCO Kalol, Kalol city, Chhatral, Nandasan and Ganeshpura. A new four-lane railway overbridge will also be built at Vaghara, adjacent to the existing Hayat Kalol railway overbridge. DeshGujarat
