Rajya Sabah MP from Gujarat and senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel has in a letter to Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel expressed worries regarding depleting water level in the Narmada river, particularly in the Bharuch region.

Ahmed Patel in his letter stated, “Near Bharuch-Ankleshwar, the width of the river has shrunk from 1.5 km to just 400 meters, a phenomenon not seen in the recent past.”

He said as fresh water levels in the river recedes, saline water from the sea has almost reached up to 40 kms into the estuary causing problem to farmers and industries.

He said deficient rainfall is partly responsible for the situation. In the long run government must create a bund and weir cum causeway. As immediate measure, water should be released into Narmada river. River should be dredged at regular intervals.

Ahmed Patel has requested for immediate corrective actions to protect, preserve and nourish the Narmada which is integral to the identity and culture of Gujarat.
