9 deaths, 2004 shifted, 405 rescued in Gujarat flood; situation eases as rain stops

Rain remained somewhat subdued today even as at least 15 lives have been lost in related incidents in last 3 days.
Six of the deaths were reported today while 9 took place in last two days. Total rain death figures this year has also crossed 50 mark and was at an estimated 59 of which maximum over 30 deaths were caused by lightening while a large number was also of those washed away.
Though some spells of heavy rain was expected till tomorrow morning in the state and adjoining union territories yet no fresh heavy rain warning has been issued for the period from tomorrow. Morbi town and Lakhtar in Surendranagar witnessed moderate rains till 7 pm today.
In last 24 hours 200 talukas saw rain of which Abdasa in Kutch witnessed maximum 322 mm (around 13 inches), Jodia in Jamnagar saw 259 mm (over 10 inches), Dasada in Surendranagar 236 mm, Dhrangadhra 166 mm, Chotila 149mm, Rajkot city saw 206 mm. 18 Talukas have seen over 100 mm of rainfall. Ahmedabad city has seen only 22 mm (around an inch) while Mandal in the district has witnessed maximum 71, Bavala also has witnessed 59 mm of rain.
Today a youth and an adolescent boy drowned in rain-surged river Bhogavo near Ratanpar village in Joravarnagar area of Surendranagar while the body of one person who slipped in to a water body in Tuva village in Wadhavan taluka of the district was also fished out. The body of one person who was washed away with his vehicle during rains was found in Panjvadi village of Surendranagar. One boy drowned in Aaji river in Bhagvati Para of Rajkot today. Another man drowned in Nakhatrana in Kutch district.
The state government has put the rain death figures for last two days (July 14 and 15) at 9. (Gandhinagar – 1, Banaskantha- 1, Aravalli – 1, Rajkot- 1, Surendranagar- 2, Gir-Somnath-1, Dwarka- 1, Jamnagar-1).
However including today’s figures, Surendranagar has seen over all 6 deaths in last 3 days, Rajkot 2 and Kutch at least 1.
Still search for some missing ones was on including 3 people who were washed away with their vehicle in Jamnagar yesterday. There damaged vehicle has been recovered.
Meanwhile Air Force was used for rescue on second consecutive day in Surendranagar and airlifted 3 people from a flood affected area in Limabdi. Yesterday 4 people were airlifted from Barada in Dhrangadhra.
NDRF teams today rescued 20 people from flood affected Jodiya in Jamnagar taking the total number of rescues in last three days to 405 of which 147 were rescued on July 14 and 238 yesterday.
In last two days alone the state has seen around 8% of total monsoon rain taking the total season average to 37.41%. The rain figure till July 15 last year was only 21.20%. Many of the dams have overflown and 17 of them have been put on high alert and 6 on alert (of total 203). Rivers have also surged. Water level in Sardar Sarovar Dam was rising and has crossed 117 meters but as its overflow level from earlier 121.92 meters has gone up to 138.68 meters owing to fitting and closing of gates, there was not chance of overflow in near future.

Meanwhile, Rajkot which has also seen over 20 inches of rain in last two days continued to reel under heavy water logging and motor pumps were used to remove water from Civil Hospital and other places where rain water has entered the Radiology department.
Around 56 roads have been damaged owing to rain including two national highways and around a dozen state highways.
– 3 people missing from small culvert near Moda village of Jamnagar Rural. More details are awaited as bodies are yet to be traced.
-Four villages near Maliya miyana marooned after water was released from machhu dam. Some fishermen using boats trying to reach safer locations.
– 56 roads were closed as in morning including 11 state highways and 2 national highways due to flood water or breach.
– Nakhatrana:Search is on for drowning at 6.30am. Koli Jakhu Ibrahim M42. Aamara, talav: villagers had went to celebrate water inflow.
