Power generation through reversible turbine thanks to Garudeshwar weir
September 16, 2019
Gandhinagar: A small dam called Garudeshwar weir is being constructed at a cost of Rs. 300 crore at location around 15 km away from Sardar Sarovar Narmada dam. The project is likely to complete in February 2020. Once it is completed, power generation will be possible using 6 hydro power turbines with same volume of water again and again.
At present, 1200 MW capacity riverbed power turbine power generation needs dam water through pen stroke. Later same water travels to river. In order to stop its discharge, a 200 meter wide and 32.75 meter tall weir is being constructed in downstream of Narmada dam. It will be able to contain 850 lakh square meter water.
Once the weir work is completed, the water discharged from riverbed power house will be filled in Garudeshwar weir upto 32.75 meter height and in non-peak hours when power demand is lesser, the weir water will be passed through power house via pumping and added to dam. In peak hours when power demand is necessary, dam water will be passed through power house again to fill the weir.
River bed power house has reversible turbines installed from beginning itself. This will result into surplus power generation.
