Sonia Gandhi to decide whether to contest both Rajya Sabha seats or just one: Amit Chavda
March 17, 2020
Gandhinagar: Gujarat Congress chief Amit Chavda today told media persons here that party MLAs have unanimously passed a one line resolution today that decision of party chief Sonia Gandhi will be final on whether to contest two seats of Rajya Sabha in Gujarat or just one seat.
He said party’s state incharge Rajeev Satav and national observers BK Hariprasad and Rajnitai Patil hele detailed discussion with party MLAs and state party leadership today at Jaipur based resort where Gujarat MLAs are camping. The incharge and observers will later today meet party president Sonia Gandhi and hand over a report to her. Smt Gandhi will take decision by today on whether to contest both seat or withdraw nomination on one of two seats.
Chavda said party leadership is in talk with leadership of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP) over support of their MLAs.
It’s worth noting that Congress has fielded two candidates in four seat Rajya Sabha election. They are Bharatsinh Solanki and Shaktisinh Gohil. When the election was announced, Congress had enough strength to win both seats, however later five Congress MLAs haver resigned. As per existing strength, only one of two Congress candidates can win the election. For last two-three days, discussion are going on within State leadership of Congres party on who among two candidates should withdraw nomination. Till yesterday, Congress party’s public stand was that it would contest both seats and win them by poaching some BJP MLAs who are upset with their party. However, today the party has publicly said that withdrawal of nomination by one of two candidates is option being discussed.
It is believed that while central leadership of party wants Shaktisinh Gohil to continue as only candidate, the other candidate Bharatsinh Solanki doesn’t want to withdraw his nomination. Solanki is confident to win the election if given chance to continue to be in contest.
Congress has shifted its all MLAs to neighboring Congress ruled state Rajasthan ‘to evade poaching by BJP’ while assembly session is underway. Polling for four Rajya Sabha seats will take place on March 26.
