National Herald Case: Gujarat Congress holds dharna against questioning of Sonia Gandhi
July 21, 2022
Ahmedabad: Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi, 75, was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for about three hours today, which was the first day of her appearance before the probe agency in an alleged money laundering case linked to the National Herald newspaper.
Calling the actions of the probe agency political vendetta, the party held a nationwide protest in support of Sonia Gandhi. Gujarat Congress also held a dharna at Lal Darwaja area in Ahmedabad alleging “wrong harassments to party chief Sonia Gandhi by Enforcement Directorate”.
The ED is currently investigating the shareholding pattern and financial transactions as well as the role of party functionaries in the functioning of AJL and YIL after a trial court took cognizance of a private criminal complaint filed by Subramanian Swamy in 2013.
The agency had earlier issued similar summons to Sonia Gandhi as she did not appear before the investigators on June 8 and then on June 21 due to COVID-19.
The agency wants to record Sonia Gandhi’s statements under criminal sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
