Surat: The barrage project on the Tapi River has recently received approval from the state government for crucial surveys and studies. This approval will pave the way for the project to enter its next phase. These surveys include hydrographic, topographic, and environmental assessments, which are important for the project’s advancement.

With the population of Surat expected to rise to 2.27 crores by 2048, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has prioritized the completion of the proposed conventional barrage project. A total of 76 studies were required under Part-A tender conditions, including soil investigations, flood estimations, and physical and mathematical modeling. This approval for conducting studies will allow the project to move into the next phase of development.

The Designs Circle of the Road and Building Department oversees proof-checking for the bridge designs associated with the barrage. After obtaining various permissions from state and central government agencies, including the Environment Department and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ), construction is expected to begin post-monsoon on both sides of the river. Construction on the bridge connecting the barrage has already begun in Rundh, with the final phase of design and proof checking set to begin shortly.

In the coming months, after the completion of the bridge, work on the conventional barrage will commence in Rundh and Bhatha. Additionally, the contractor has completed mathematical and physical model studies for the barrage project.
