SC junks Kejriwal’s plea challenging summons in GU defamation case
October 21, 2024
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a plea from AAP national convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who had challenged the summons against him in a criminal defamation case regarding his comments on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s educational qualifications.
A bench comprising Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice S V N Bhatti noted that they had already dismissed a similar plea from AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, a co-accused in the case, on April 8, 2024.
“…Considering the earlier decision in a related case involving a person facing the same charges, we decline to take up this matter. The special leave petition is therefore dismissed,” the court stated. However, the bench clarified, “We have not ruled on the merits of either party’s arguments, and all contentions remain open.”
Both AAP leaders are involved in a defamation case filed by Gujarat University over their “sarcastic” and “derogatory” remarks about Modi’s educational degrees. DeshGujarat
