March 04, 2025
Anand: The new jail under construction at Bakrol in Anand district, with a capacity of 370 prisoners and a cost of ₹64.29 crore, has been approved as the Anand District Jail by the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Harsh Sanghvi.
Until now, only the Bakrol Taluka Jail was operational in Anand district. Now, a new jail with a capacity of 370 prisoners is being built on the allotted land at Bakrol. This facility will accommodate 330 male prisoners and 40 female prisoners.
For a jail to be designated as a district jail, it must have a minimum capacity of 240 prisoners. Since this new facility exceeds that requirement, it has been officially recognized as a district jail. The construction, with an estimated cost of ₹64.29 crore, is expected to be completed soon. Once operational, it will significantly enhance jail management and security in Anand district.
To address overcrowding, this new jail is part of a broader initiative to expand prison infrastructure.
Currently, Anand Taluka Sub-Jail operates under the control of the Mamlatdar. With the establishment of the new Anand District Jail, accused individuals from Anand district, who are currently held in Nadiad District Jail, will be transferred here. This will help reduce overcrowding in Nadiad Jail.
Local court detainees from Anand district will now be housed in Anand District Jail, making it easier for their families to visit and maintain contact with their children. This will provide financial relief to families and help children focus better on their studies.
With local inmates housed in Anand District Jail, their regular court appearances will be more efficient, leading to faster case resolutions. Additionally, it will reduce expenses related to police custody and transport, easing the financial burden on the government. DeshGujarat
