Gujarat govt, THDC India Ltd ink MoU for 184.08 MW pumped storage project at Tehri Garhwal
June 25, 2025
Gandhinagar: The Gujarat Government today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with THDC India Limited for a 184.08 MW pumped storage capacity project at Tehri Garhwal. The MoU was signed by Additional Chief Secretary of the Energy Department, S.J. Haider; Director (Finance) of THDC India Limited, S.K. Garg; Managing Director of Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd. (GUVNL), Anupam Anand; and other senior officials. Finance and Energy Minister Kanubhai Desai and THDC Chairman Shri R.K. Vishnoi were present on the occasion.
Gujarat continues to lead in the adoption of renewable energy to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. As of May 2025, Gujarat holds the top position in the country with an installed renewable energy capacity of 35.94 GW. The state has also set an ambitious target of exceeding 100 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, underlining its significant contribution to India’s clean energy transition, said an official statement.
It is worth mentioning that pumped storage projects (PSPs) play a crucial role in the energy transformation process by enabling large-scale energy storage. Typically, during the day when solar energy generation is high, PSPs use that energy to pump water from a lower to an upper reservoir. When solar generation drops and demand rises, the stored water is released from the upper reservoir to generate electricity via turbines. This mechanism helps balance the power grid, ensures optimal use of renewable energy, reduces dependency on fossil fuels, and provides a stable and reliable power supply. DeshGujarat
