Vadodara: Ajwa Sarovar (reservoir) overflowed today after heavy rainfall lashed its catchment area on Sunday. As per standard protocol, the reservoir’s gates are fixed at 211 feet until August 15. However, this morning the water level rose to 211.45 feet at 6 am, further increased to 211.50 feet at 12 noon, and reached 211.66 feet by 3:30 pm, causing excess water to overflow above the gates.

The Ajwa reservoir has 62 gates, which are set at varying levels throughout the year. Between now and mid‑August, the water level is maintained at 211 feet above sea level. Once this level is exceeded, the excess water flows into the Surya rivulet, which eventually joins the Vishwamitri river.

Meanwhile, the discharge, currently around 1,000 cusecs, is not a cause for concern for the people of Vadodara, as the Vishwamitri river, which flows through the city, is at a safe level of 10.13 feet at the Kalaghoda bridge, where the water level is measured.

With only moderate rainfall reported in the city and the river’s catchment area, the water level is expected to recede without significantly impacting the Vishwamitri. DeshGujarat
