Eggs thrown at Ganesh idol in Vadodara; police round up 8 suspects

Vadodara: Tension gripped the Panigate area of the city after anti-social elements allegedly threw eggs at the Ganesh idol aagman procession by Nirmal Park Yuvak Mandal around 3 am on August 25. The incident, which also saw eggs being hurled at volunteers and even in the presence of police, has sparked outrage among residents and Hindu organisations. Acting promptly in this sensitive matter, the city police rounded up eight suspects and are carrying out the investigation, confirmed Vadodara City Police Commissioner Narasimha Komar.

Talking about the incident, Satyam, a member of Nirmal Bhakt Yuvak Mandal, said, “We were carrying the idol of Lord Ganesha when someone threw eggs from the third floor. We immediately informed the city police. When the police arrived, eggs were thrown at them as well.” The incident took place near Mazar Market under the jurisdiction of the City Police Station. Satyam alleged that the act was an attempt to provoke communal tension and disrupt Hindu festivals. He added that such incidents could spoil the atmosphere of Vadodara and Gujarat.

Taking the matter seriously, Vadodara city police registered a case against unknown persons. ACP, DCP, Crime Branch, SOG, and FSL teams were activated. Around 4 am, police detained suspects and began interrogation. Efforts are ongoing to identify the culprits through CCTV footage.

Addressing the media, Deputy Commissioner of Police Andrew Macwan stated that around 3 am on August 26, eggs were thrown at the Ganesh idol being carried by Nirmal Park Yuvak Mandal. The police reached the scene immediately and brought the situation under control. A case has been registered at the City Police Station, and strict action will be taken against the accused. Suspects have been detained for questioning, and CCTV footage is being examined.

VHP Vadodara City Secretary Vishnu Prajapati called it a “conspiracy” and demanded strict action, warning that such acts have deeply hurt religious sentiments.

Police have increased patrolling and security in the area. PI Rajendra Chauhan of the City Police Station said that three suspects have already been rounded up, and further details will be shared by senior officials. DeshGujarat
